STEP 1: Learn about yourself before you can learn about others. Be aware of the differences that make us all unique. Make sure you understand and confront your own prejudices. STEP 2: Start a conversation with others about their culture, lifestyle, and personal story. Be open and keep the conversation going. STEP 3: Now that you are comfortable talking about what makes everyone different, engage, act and celebrate what each individual has to offer. Truly get to know others and immerse yourself in different experiences. STEP 4: Be a part of the solution. Make others feel welcomed. Be sure that their stories are heard. Make sure to never give up, always have compassion, and above all, be kind. It all started with steps. We wanted our 'How-To' video to be easy to understand while still making a difference to our viewers. We began discussing the problems of marginalization due to being an "a-typical" student, and we came up with four ways to resolve it.
To us, it was important for others to learn about the world around them and to embrace those differences. Being "a-typical" is unique. Being "a-typical" is beautiful. Being "a-typical" is something to be proud of. It should not keep anyone from having their voice and story heard. According to our poll, 88% of people state they would be willing to help promote diversity and inclusion on campus. But, how exactly do we go about that? We hope our video addresses this issue. Our video is filled with powerful shots and footage of people we talked to who have felt marginalized because they did not fit into the "typical" student mold. |
